We are proud to share that following our most recent Environmental Health Officer inspection, we have maintained our 5-star food hygiene rating. It is a result that reflects the dedication and hard work of our kitchen team, who uphold the same high standards at every wedding we host, not just when an inspection is on the horizon.
While most couples spend a great deal of time researching their wedding venue’s décor, capacity, and location, food hygiene ratings are rarely top of the checklist. We think they should be, as this is what the rating actually means.
What is an EHO Inspection?
An Environmental Health Officer inspection is carried out by the local authority and assesses food businesses on their hygiene standards and food safety practices. One of the things that gives the result genuine credibility is that inspections are unannounced. There is no opportunity to prepare or put on a performance for the day. What the inspector finds is simply a reflection of how the kitchen operates as a matter of routine.
Businesses are awarded a score between 0 and 5, with 5 being the highest possible rating on the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. It is worth noting that this is a nationally recognised scheme run in partnership with the Food Standards Agency, so the standards being assessed are consistent and rigorous.
What Does a 5-Star Rating Actually Cover?
The inspection looks at three key areas. The first is food handling, which covers how food is prepared, cooked, and stored, including how potential cross-contamination risks are managed. The second is the condition of the premises, including the cleanliness of the kitchen, equipment, and facilities. The third, and arguably the most telling, is the confidence in management systems — essentially how well the business understands and documents its food safety procedures, including allergen management and temperature controls.
Achieving a 5-star rating means performing to the highest standard across all three of those areas, not just one or two. It is a rounded assessment of how a kitchen operates as a whole.
Why It Matters When You Choose a Venue With In-House Catering
This is where the rating becomes particularly relevant to couples choosing Hyde Bank Farm. We offer in-house catering, which means our kitchen team prepares and serves your wedding breakfast directly. There is no external caterer to vet separately, which also means the standard of the food and the hygiene practices behind it sit entirely with us.
That is a responsibility we take seriously. Wedding catering is not straightforward. We are producing large quantities of food to a precise schedule, managing multiple dietary requirements and allergens across a full guest list, and doing so in a way that needs to be both safe and exceptional. The 5-star rating reflects our ability to do that consistently and to the standard the Food Standards Agency expects.
For couples with guests who have allergies or specific dietary needs, that confidence matters even more. Knowing that allergen management is a formal part of how we operate, assessed independently and found to be at the highest level, means one less thing to worry about on your wedding day.
What Maintaining the Rating Looks Like in Practice
A 5-star rating is not something you achieve once and forget about. It is the result of consistent practices that run through every service we deliver, every wedding we cater for, and every day the kitchen is in operation. Our team follows the same rigorous standards whether we are preparing a wedding breakfast for 30 guests or a large wedding reception for 110.
That consistency is something we take genuine pride in. The rating we have maintained is a direct reflection of the care and professionalism our kitchen team brings to their work, and we are grateful for the dedication they show day in and day out.
